Our Guide To Preparation And Installation

Our Guide To Preparation And Installation

At Ballina Turf Farm, we supply and deliver turf for residential and commercial clients in the Northern Rivers.

Established in 2005, we've laid turf for a wide variety of properties including:

  • Homes
  • Acreages
  • Schools
  • Commercial buildings
  • Council developments
  • Golf courses
  • Parks
  • City centres

If you don’t have the time or aren’t sure how to measure your area please call us for advice. We can also recommend several contractors in the area who can help with preparation and laying.

MEASURING:

Using a tape measure, walk around your yard and measure the area of your planned lawn (perhaps you might like to prepare a quick sketch of the lawn on a piece of paper, be sure to include paths, gardens, pool etc.).

  1. Measure the different areas according to their shapes.
  2. Calculate the square metres needed for each area and add up the total required.
  3. It is usually a good idea to order just a bit extra. We recommend 5%.

There are also apps available that can help you. SITE AND SOIL PREPARATION:

  • Remove existing turf
  • Site should be cleared from all debris
  • Install a good quality weed free topsoil
  • Ensure the topsoil is approx. 2-3cm below paths or driveways
  • Lightly water the prepared area to settle and provide a moist base

LAYING THE TURF

Most important: green side up!

Begin watering your lawn as soon as it is installed, as turf is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture to prosper.

Begin laying turf along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or path. Butt and push edges and ends against each other tightly, without stretching and avoid gaps or overlaps.

Stagger the joints in each row in a brick like fashion using a sharp knife or shovel to trim corners etc (avoid leaving small strips at outer edges, as they will not retain moisture). On slopes, avoid walking or kneeling on the turf as much as you can, whilst it is being installed or just after watering.

Once installed, roll the entire turfed area, this will improve the turf/soil contact and remove any unwanted air pockets. You can hire rollers from Kennard’s Hire or Ready Hire. Avoid heavy traffic on your new lawn during the first 4 weeks, by doing so, this will give the roots an opportunity to firmly knit with the soil & will ensure the turf remains level.

WATERING NEW TURF

“When in doubt, water it out”

  • A little hint to save on water is to place a cup 2 metres away from the sprinkler, when the cup measures approximately 25mm move the sprinkler to a different area.
  • Ideally water for 1 hour per day for the first two weeks, by doing this, the turf will establish its root system, please check the current water restrictions in your area on the Water Wise website: https://www.seqwater.com.au/water-wise
  • When you believe your turf has become firmly rooted, less frequent and deeper watering should begin.
  • Please note weather conditions dictate the amount and frequency of watering, be certain that your new turf has enough moisture to survive hot, dry or windy periods.
  • Reflected heat from buildings dry out turf quicker, so be sure to water these areas more often.
  • A good indication that your turf is too dry will be gaps developing between the joins and if you pick up a corner and find the soil is very dry, you need to water immediately.
  • Once fully established (approximately 8 weeks) the turf should only be watered when necessary, by doing this it will assist in producing a more drought tolerant turf.

MAINTENANCE:

Mowing:

  • Keep the grass lush and thick
  • Avoid long periods between mowing
  • Only remove 1⁄3 of the leaf per mow
  • Don’t mow too short

Don’t be fooled into thinking that by mowing really low you won’t have to mow as frequently. In most cases, you will damage the lawn through scalping, put stress on the lawn, invite weeds and create more, not less work for yourself.

FERTILISING

Like all plants, lawns need nutrients to stay healthy and look good. Speak to one of our team members for advice on the best options.

TOP DRESSING:

Top dressing is a practice used for filling low spots or uneven areas. Top dressing should only be carried out during the growing season when your lawn is active.

LONG TERM WATERING:

How often do you need to water your lawn? This depends on a number of factors. Eg: climate, water restrictions, soil type, lawn variety & health of your lawn. Once established, less frequent but deeper soakings are preferred. Early morning is the best time to water. Your lawn will tell you when it needs watering - don’t over water!
